Malpractice: Healthcare in the Southwest U.S.
Malpractice News: According to a study conducted by Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, where you live (in terms of geographic region) can play a significant role in the healthcare you receive. While the rates of disease are not different based on where you live, the way patients are treated is sometimes different. In the southwestern portion of the U.S., the study noted the following:
- According to the CDC, Southern women are more likely to undergo a partial hysterectomy for problems such as fibroids. The average age for a southern women to have their uterus removed is 44, while the percentage for women in the northeast is 49.
- Because of the relatively high number of Southerners who lack health insurance, preventive care is hard for many to afford. The resulting ER overload can affect patient care when patients normally seen in a doctor’s office are seeking treatment in an ER setting.
- In Louisiana, the number of women filling estrogen prescriptions dropped to 40 percent during 2000 to 2006, while the percentage dropped to 74 percent over the same time span in New York.
- Women in Georgia have better access to breast reconstruction. A 2006 study conducted at the University of Michigan noted that fewer than 20 percent of women nationwide who have a mastectomy get reconstruction at the same time. But in Atlanta, the percentage was 35 percent. The most common reconstruction procedure, the "TRAM flap" (which uses skin, fat, and muscle from the abdomen to refashion the breast), was developed by an Atlanta surgeon.
