$10-million settlement for misdiagnosed heart infection
October 23, 2008 -- A 33-year-old vice president at one of Chicago’s largest information technology staffing firms settled a medical malpractice lawsuit last week for $10.2 million after doctors overlooked signs of a heart infection five times.
Court papers charged that doctors affiliated with a local hospital repeatedly misdiagnosed his heart infection, sending the man home with allergy medication once and instructions on visiting a back specialist another time.
The infection led to a stroke that left the executive with severe physical and mental disabilities. He has difficulty walking, talking and reading and still suffers from seizures, his lawyer told the Chicago Sun-Times.
“The stroke robbed him of the personality and skills that made him so successful in business and in life," said his attorney. "The warning signs were there, but the doctors missed them.”
The man’s wife said the settlement will be used to continue his rehabilitation and search for other ways to help her husband recover. The amount of the settlement was based on the executive’s projected future earnings.
