MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
Heart problems from Fen-phen weight-loss drug caused record series of medical malpractice lawsuits

August 12, 2008 – One of the largest series of medical malpractice cases involves the drug Fen-phen, a weight-loss drug produced by American Home Products.

Soon after Fen-phen was released for use, reports came in of patients suffering heart attacks and strokes after taking the drug. It was withdrawn from the market in 1997.

The extent of the damage that Fen-phen has caused is still being determined. This we do know: Former Fen-phen users have reportedly filed 175,000 claims against Wyeth.

And according to the April 2005 edition of American Lawyer magazine, more than 50,000 people who have taken the drug have filed medical malpractice suits – and more than $14 billion has already been paid out in verdicts and settlements.

Wyeth has reportedly designated $21 billion for Fen-phen's lawsuits.
