Three Florida doctors botch routine pacemaker operation
Florida jury awards $4.5 million to family of deceased in Florida malpractice pacemaker case.
December 1, 2008 – A Florida jury on Friday ruled against three doctors named in a medical malpractice lawsuit that was filed by the family of a 35-year-old man who died after receiving a heart pacemaker at a Fort Lauderdale medical center.
The Broward County jury awarded the family $4.5 million in a medical malpractice verdict against three doctors who participated in the operation. The verdict also included a cardiologist, who was found partly responsible for the death. He had settled with the family earlier for an undisclosed amount.
During the deliberation, the jury decided that the man’s pacemaker operation should have been delayed when he developed lung problems. Instead, doctors went ahead with the procedure and the patient died 17 days later of respiratory failure in November 2001. Friday's jury award will go to the man’s wife and his 12-year-old daughter.
