First lawsuit filed after infection outbreak at Fresno medical center
October 23, 2008 -- The first malpractice lawsuit filed in connection with last year’s infection outbreak at a California medical center was filed October 16 by a former patient, who charges he contracted a chest infection after heart surgery through the negligence of the hospital and his surgeon.
Infections at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno -- which first surfaced last year -- caused the hospital to twice shut down its cardiac surgery unit, most recently in June, the Fresno Bee reported.
The lawsuit alleges the hospital and the surgeon were medically negligent in failing to properly treat the patient. The surgeon no longer works at Saint Agnes.
Infections spiked last year after Saint Agnes introduced a new cardiac surgery team to the staff. The outbreak of deep chest-wound infections in 12 cardiac-surgery patients may have led to the death of two, possibly three, patients, said the Fresno Bee.
