Long Island hospital killed my husband, says NYPD detective's widow in lawsuit
September 29, 2008 -- A medical malpractice lawsuit charging a Long Island hospital with negligence in the death of an NYPD detective will be heard in Queens Supreme Court next month.
The detective, 46 at the time, and a veteran of New York City’s police force for 22 years, was admitted to the hospital in January of 1995 believing he had suffered a heart attack.
But the lawsuit accuses the Manhasset, L.I., hospital with letting inexperienced medical residents remove the officer’s gallbladder -- even though he didn’t have gallstones.
According to the suit, the patient suffered for three years because a major artery in his abdomen was severed during the surgery. An autopsy cited the artery damage as one of the main causes of his death, his lawyer said.
