"The Verdict" – Paul Newman as a lawyer defending a childbirth malpractice victim

Weitz & Luxenberg recognizes Paul Newman's 54-year film career and philanthropic legacy of helping disadvantaged children. Our firm fondly remembers his film, "The Verdict," an inspiring story about medical malpractice.  Mr. Newman’s portrayal of a valiant lawyer, who, for the sake of his client, refuses to accept a tiny hospital settlement for perpetrating childbirth malpractice, won him a Best Actor nomination in 1982, and helped earn five Oscar nominations for the film, including Best Picture.

September 29, 2008 – When movie star Paul Newman, 83, died Friday after a long battle with cancer, Robert Redford, who starred with the late actor in such American classic movies as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and “The Sting,” remembered him most eloquently.

“I have lost a real friend,” said Mr. Redford. “My life – and this country – is better for his being in it.”

In addition to a stellar film career that entertained millions of people worldwide, Mr. Newman left another legacy: He created a line of grocery store food products called “Newman’s Own,” whose multimillion-dollar profits have been contributed to summer camps for disadvantaged children for more than 20 years.

Malpractice attorney Paul Newman in “The Verdict”

Everyone has a favorite Paul Newman movie, but ours is “The Verdict.” It is a clever, suspenseful and entertaining movie that speaks to the very mission of our personal injury law firm; that is, to demonstrate courage despite the adversary and to achieve the greatest verdicts and settlements we can for the less fortunate when they are caused serious injury. What follows is Mr. Newman’s understated but brilliant summation to the jury:

“So much of the time we're just lost. We say please God, tell us, what is right, what is true. And there is no justice. The rich win, the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie, and after a time we become dead. ... We think of ourselves as victims, we become victims. We become, we become weak. ...

"In my religion, we say act as if you had faith. ... If we are to have faith in justice, we need only to believe in ourselves. ... I believe there is justice in our hearts.”
