West Virginia medical malpractice cases piling deeper than a coal mine
August 25, 2008 — The West Virginia Medical Association reports that the number of medical malpractice cases against state doctors and hospitals is on the rise again.
West Virginia malpractice cases escalating
According to the association, 315 medical malpractice cases were filed in 2003. Medical malpractice cases increased from 130 in 2004 to 174 last year — a 34 percent increase. As of July 31 of this year, 75 lawsuits have been filed in the state.
The numbers soared to 273 malpractice cases in 2005; with apparently 126 of those claims filed against one former Putnam County surgeon, the Charleston Gazette reported.
