Malpractice News: Bipolar Disorder Link in Children Born to Older Fathers
Malpractice News: According to a Swedish research study, children born to older fathers are at a greater risk to develop bipolar disorder. The study, led by researchers at Sweden's Karolinska Institute, was published in the September 2008 edition of Archives of General Psychiatry.
Researchers analyzed Swedish national registry data for more than 80,000 people, including 13,428 with bipolar disorder who were born between 1932 and 1991. The risk of bipolar disorder began to increase in children whose fathers were 40 years old when they were born, and the highest risk in children born to fathers aged 55 and older. Children born to men in these age groups were 37 percent more likely to develop bipolar disorder than those children born to fathers in their 20s.
