Malpractice in the News: Florida Teen’s Death After Breast Surgery
A cautionary tale about the dangers of malpractice and breast surgery was tragically proven true in March 2008 with the death of Florida teen.
She reportedly underwent routine breast surgery to repair a congenital condition, but the 18 year old Boca Raton teenager died due to an unexpected outcome related to a rare condition: malignant hypothermia.
Malignant hyperthermia is a rare, yet catastrophic condition that is caused by certain anesthetics, which then trigger a chain reaction that puts the patient into an increased metabolic state. The symptoms include rapid heart rate, rigid muscles and fevers reaching 110 degrees or higher.
During hospital surgeries, patients who experience this symptom are given the drug Dantrolene, which is started immediately once symptoms occur. Unfortunately, while her surgery took place at a well-respected cosmetic surgery clinic with board-certified surgeon and anesthetists, because Dantrolene is not indicated in routine surgeries, the drug was not kept on-site at the clinic.
