Record $2.5 million verdict for misdiagnosed cancer death of mother, 27

February 25, 2009 -- A Nevada district court jury in Clark County returned a record $2.5 million verdict in a medical malpractice case against a doctor and nurse who misdiagnosed cancer in a young female patient who later died.

Legal experts believe the verdict is one of the largest medical malpractice jury awards in Nevada District Court history.

After 7 months of continued visits to her doctor complaining of unresolved rectal bleeding and pain, the woman was properly diagnosed at a Las Vegas hospital. The horrific pain and rectal bleeding her doctor kept diagnosing as hemorrhoids was actually colon and rectal cancer.

She died of the advanced cancer in 2007 at the age of 27, leaving behind a husband and 5-year-old daughter.
