Malpractice News: Defibrillator Implants
Malpractice News: A study on cardiac patients with defibrillators published in the September 2008 New England Journal of Medicine found that patients were far more likely to die within four years after receiving a shock from their defibrillator. Approximately 235,000 Americans have received defibrillator implants.
In the study of 811 patients with defibrillators, almost one-third reported receiving a shock from the device during the four years after the device was implanted. Previous research studies showed that patients implanted with defibrillators were at a 23 percent reduced risk of dying from a heart attack or other cardiac event. Our medical malpractice
