MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
Dentist sued for botched nasal surgery
August 29, 2008 – After four days of testimony in a medical malpractice case, a Nebraska court jury began deliberating whether a North Platte dentist was negligent when he performed nasal surgery on a patient who lost his sense of smell a month after the operation.
The dentist, who diagnosed that his patient needed three wisdom teeth pulled, also suggested a nasal surgery procedure when he noticed his patient had trouble breathing through his nose. The patient agreed to the procedure and it was performed the same day his three teeth were pulled.
That was a bad day for this 35-year-old man from North Platte, who lost his sense of smell after the procedure.
His malpractice lawsuit accuses the doctor of applying too much heat to his nasal tissue during the procedure, which resulted in an infection that led to the patient’s permanent loss of smell.
