Malpractice News: Drug Maker to Begin Disclosure of Payments to Doctors

Malpractice News: Beginning in 2009, drug maker Eli Lilly and Co. will begin a policy of disclosures of funds paid to individual doctors for advice, speeches and other services. The reporting will reflect single payments in excess of $500.00.

The drug company's decision stems from the current Congressional push for a physician disclosure bill. In the past two years, both the Senate and House have introduced bills that would require drug and medical device manufacturers to disclose any payments to doctors exceeding $25.00.

At the present time, Maine, Minnesota, Vermont, West Virginia and the District of Columbia have disclosure laws for payments from drug companies to doctors, but the state laws do not require disclosure of payments from medical device makers.
