Jury rules against doctor after surgery leaves patient handicapped
August 29, 2008 – An Illinois court jury hearing a medical malpractice trial has awarded $24 million to a kidney stone patient after a common surgical operation by his doctor left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
According to the malpractice lawsuit, the man is now physically handicapped and suffers from severe double vision and slurred speech, making him difficult to understand. Prior to the operation, he worked for a local phone company.
In addition to the $24 million award to help cover his future medical services and lost wages, the plaintiff settled out of court with another doctor and nurse for $1 million each.
