Malpractice News: Reports of Serious Drug Reactions at All-Time High

Malpractice News: In a September 2008 report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMC), the organization noted a record number of serious problems and deaths linked to medications from the FDA’s report on adverse drug reactions. The FDA’s report for the first quarter of 2008 reflected approximately 21,000 reports of serious reactions, which included over 4,800 deaths.

Two drugs accounted for a large share of the reports: Chantix, an anti-smoking medication and the blood-thinning drug Heparin.

Serious injuries related to Chantix (varenicline) accounted for 1,001 new cases, which included 50 deaths.

In the first quarter of 2008, the FDA received 779 injury reports, which included 102 deaths, from Heparin. The FDA report additionally stated while many Heparin reports stemmed from the recall of the drug due to contamination from Chinese manufacturers, not all of the injuries and adverse outcomes stemmed from contamination issues.
