Malpractice News: Drug firms must pay Alabama $114 million

Malpractice News: On July 1, 2008 the Associated Press reported that the Court in Montgomery, Alabama found GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis defrauded Alabama in a Medicaid drug pricing scheme and ordered the firms to pay more than $114 million in damages.

In the jury’s second day of deliberations, they found that the GlaxoSmithKline should pay $80.8 million in compensatory damages, and Novartis should pay about $33.7 million. The jury did not order punitive damages.

In a separate case tried in February 2008, a jury awarded the state $215 million against AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP; however, the judge later reduced that verdict to $160 million.
