Malpractice News: Estrogen and Schizophrenia in Women
Malpractice News: An Australian study of women suffering from schizophrenia shows that estrogen therapy in patients of child-bearing age caused the symptoms of “positive” symptoms of the disease, such as delusions and distorted thinking, to decrease. The study was reported in the August 2008 edition of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
In the research study, 102 women suffering from schizophrenia were studied, with half given an estrogen drug called estradiol, while the other half of the women were given a placebo. The women taking estrogen in addition to their other prescribed drugs had fewer delusions and hallucinations than those who received the placebo.
According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, schizophrenia affects about 1.1 percent of Americans aged 18 and older. Women suffering from the disease are typically diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood.
