Malpractice News: Arizona Investigation on Infant Deaths and Cold Medicines
Malpractice News: A research study conducted from 1999-2006 leads to a new warning about giving over the counter cough and cold medicines to infants and children under the age of two. The report was published in the August 2008 edition of Pediatrics.
The researchers reviewed information from the Arizona mortality database on infants in that state who died in 2006 from unexpected causes. The researchers reviewed 21 cases where the cause of death was unrelated to trauma and for which autopsy reports were available, and found that 10 of those children had been a cough and cold medication soon before their deaths.
While the study findings did not conclude the medications caused or contributed death, they provide additional confirmation to the January 2008 warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advising parents against giving over the counter cough or cold medications to children aged 2 and under.
