Malpractice News: LVAD Heart Pumps may Help Hearts without Transplant

Malpractice News: Cardiac experts are advocating for further testing of implanted heart pumps on patients with less severe symptoms of heart failure. Experts gathered by the National Institutes of Health recently urged testing LVAD heart pumps on patients who are not critically ill, rather than reserving the device implantation as a last stage effort for patients with severe heart disease awaiting transplant surgery.

Approximately 5.3 million Americans and 20 million people worldwide suffer from severe cardiac disease from heart damage sustained from heart attacks or other health problems. Heart failure claims the lives of over 57,000 Americans each year.

Studies are currently being conducted on the use of implanted left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The devices “take over” the work of the left ventricle of the heart, which pumps blood through the body. The use of LVADs essentially “rests” a damaged heart. About a third of LVAD patients have shown improvement in heart muscle function.
