Malpractice News: Measles Outbreaks on the Rise
Malpractice News: According to a report issued in August 2008 by the Center for Disease Control, the number of children diagnosed with measles in the U.S. is at its highest level since 1997. Nearly half of the cases involved children who had not been vaccinated against the virus.
In 2007, there were 42 measles cases reported, while 131 cases have been reported from January through July 2008. 15 of the children contracting the virus required hospitalization.
The CDC’s review noted that a number of cases involved children being home-schooled, who are not required to be vaccinated, unlike children attending traditional schools.
122 of the children were either unvaccinated, or their vaccination status was unknown. 63 cases were reported in children aged 19 or younger where their parents had refused the vaccination.
Others reported cases included children under 1 year old who were too young to receive the vaccination. Children typically receive their first vaccination at 12-15 months as part of the MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccination.
