Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Against Minnesota Hospital
In August 2008, jurors began to hear testimony in a medical
malpractice case against a hospital in
Minneapolis,
Minnesota
which involved a severely handicapped 11 year old girl. The plaintiffs have
asked the jurors in the case to return a $20 million verdict against the
hospital.
The plaintiffs, the child’s adoptitve parents, claim the hospital
was negligent in not filing a report of suspected child abuse when the girl
was an infant. The child was first brought to the hospital’s emergency room when
she was three weeks old for treatment of a broken arm. Over the next two-three
weeks, she was treated at the same ER for injuries which included broken ribs.
When the baby was seven weeks old, she was again brought to the ER for skull
fractures from shaken baby syndrome. The subsequent investigation determined
that the abuse occurred at the hands of her biological father, who is currently
incarcarated after being convicted for the abuse.
