Malpractice News: North Carolina Man Dies After 22 Hour Wait at Hospital
Malpractice News: Federal officials are investigating the April 2008 death of a mental patient at a Goldsboro, North Carolina hospital. The 50 year old patient died after he was allegedly left in a chair for 22 hours without receiving food or other care.
An investigator's report stated the man was left unattended in a room for four hospital work shifts, had not eaten on the day of his death and was not provided assistance in using the bathroom. The 47-page report also stated that video surveillance showed hospital staff members who were to be closely monitoring the man were playing cards and watching television, and may have forged documents stating that they had provided care to the man.
North Carolina was to file a report with the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services with recommendations for new policies and procedures for patient care at the hospital. On September 2, 2008, local media in the Goldsboro area reported that North Carolina had recommended the hospital lose their funding because of this incident.
