MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
Record $12-million verdict against doctor in Illinois
malpractice case
October 13, 2008 -- An Illinois jury recently awarded the parents of a
seven-year-old boy $12 million in a medical malpractice case against the doctor
that delivered the child.
The verdict is the largest on record for DuPage County, Illinois.
According to the lawsuit, an Illinois couple’s child was born disabled due to
the negligence of the delivering physician who delayed an unexpected
Caesarean-section surgery for 45 minutes, depriving the child of oxygen and
causing his disability.
The jury agreed. According to reports, $10.5 million of the award will go
toward the future care of the seven-year-old. The child has no control over his
limbs, requires a feeding tube and must use a wheelchair.
