Brain injuries, leading cause of senior fall deaths
A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that brain injuries are the leading cause of deaths for seniors who unintentionally fall. A proper medical diagnosis after a serious fall can avoid a malpractice lawsuit or the need for a malpractice lawyer. The research was published in the June, 2008, issue of the Journal of Safety Research.
The CDC reviewed information on 16,000 deaths that occurred in 2005, where “unintentional fall” was listed as an underlying cause of death. The study reported that a little more than 50 percent of the deaths were due to brain injuries, while other causes of death included heart failure, stroke, infection and existing chronic conditions.
The CDC reports that one in three Americans, aged 65 and older, suffer falls, and about 30 percent of the falls require medical treatment. Since the severity of a brain injury sustained in a fall isn’t always apparent, experts have seen instances where an elderly patient is brought in for treatment after a fall, is conscious, but nevertheless dies within a few hours.
