Malpractice News: Smoking and Heart Attack Risk

Malpractice News: According to a presentation at the European Society of Cardiology Convention in September 2008, researchers found that women who smoke are at risk to suffer a heart attack nearly 14 years earlier than a woman who does not smoke. For men, the research found that men who smoke are likely to suffer a heart attack six years earlier than a male non-smoker.

The Norwegian researchers studied data from 1,784 patients who were admitted to Lillehammer, Norway hospitals after suffering a first heart attack. After adjusting their data to factor in cardiac risk factors such as hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes, researchers found the average age of female smokers suffering a first heart was 66, while the average age of men who smoked having a first heart attack was 64.
