Malpractice News: Possible Vytorin Link to Cancer
Malpractice News: In August 2008, the FDA released a communication regarding the cholesterol drug Vytorin and a report that the drug may put users at an increased risk of developing cancer. The statement discussed the results of a clinical trial that noted higher rates of cancer in patients taking the drug, but cautioned patients not to stop taking the drug.
Vytorin is a combination of two drugs: a statin drug, which reduces the levels of LDL (so-called “bad” cholesterol in the blood), and a second drug which limits the amount of cholesterol absorbed through the digestive system.
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology also published an August 2008 report on statin studies on over 90,000 patients, where the researchers concluded the statin users in the study were at no increased risk to develop cancer than the participants who received placebos.
