California hospital records reveal scope of malpractice
100 patients are harmed every month . . .

July 1, 2008 – The land of dreams is also the land of nightmares.

California hospital doctors performed the wrong surgery (operating on the wrong body part or the wrong patient) 41 times between July 2007 and May 2008, according to state records on medical malpractice published by the Los Angeles Times and Sign On San Diego.

During this 10-month period, 145 foreign objects were left inside patients, say state hospital malpractice records.

These records also show that California hospitals reported 1,002 cases of serious medical harm which were considered to be preventable by safety experts. About 100 patients are harmed every month, according to data from the state Department of Public Health.

The hospital data did not cite verdicts and settlements, nor if any of these cases were challenged in a malpractice lawsuit.

Under the 2006 disclosure law hospitals must inform state regulators of every occurrence of 28 different types of dangerous mistakes.
