Massachusetts doctor charged with malpractice and manslaughter in the death of a 22-year-old abortion patient
July 18, 2008 -- A Harvard-affiliated doctor charged with medical malpractice has been indicted on manslaughter charges after an abortion he performed last year in Massachusetts resulted in the death of a 22-year-old woman.
The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine found the obstetrician's conduct to be “willful, wanton, and reckless,” the Boston Globe reported. He is expected to be arraigned within a week in Barnstable Superior Court.
Last September, the doctor, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health since 2002, reportedly placed the patient under sedation at the Women’s Health Center on Camp Street in Hyannis without any means of monitoring her heart or blood pressure.
According to the medical board the doctor, a solo practitioner at the Women’s Health Center, had no assistant with him during the medical procedure who could assist in resuscitating the patient. The board also alleged that he made a variety of false statements to board investigators and “failed to timely initiate a call to 911.”
The family of the victim retained counsel and in March filed a civil lawsuit against the doctor in Barnstable Superior Court, where he will be arraigned next week.
