Ohio health center faces malpractice lawsuit
over wrong diagnosis

June 4, 2008 – A journalism student in Ohio – complaining of pain in her right arm – was misdiagnosed twice in one day by a health center doctor before physicians identified a “life-threatening infection” that forced them to amputate her right arm later that night. Her father said he intends to file a malpractice lawsuit.

The student was eventually diagnosed with “necrotizing fasciitis,” a rare bacterial infection that kills about 30 percent of those affected.

Her father said he has spoken to attorneys since his daughter’s amputation and intends to file a medical malpractice suit against the health center before Sept. 6, the one-year anniversary of his daughter’s treatment. He said that a swift diagnosis may not have saved his daughter's arm, but it could have reduced her surgical injuries.

Proving negligence wins a fair verdict or settlement for a victim’s family. Patient misdiagnosed twice in one day

The Ohio freshman was first diagnosed with a sore throat and muscle strain. Later that day, a health center doctor changed the diagnosis to anxiety and offered her Aleve and animal crackers, according to medical records released to The Post, an Athens, Ohio, newspaper.

According to The Post, a fall 2007 report by an independent consultant found the health center significantly understaffed and warned that doctors who see too many cases risk “missing the extraordinary problem hidden amongst ordinary ones.”

Today, four physicians and two nurse practitioners serve more than 20,000 students. Each saw an average of 5,506 patients in 2005 and 2006 – more than 2,000 above the recommended number, according to the report.
