MEDICAL MALPRACTICE
South Florida: Uninsured-doctors' capital of the country

August 1, 2008 – You have to have insurance to drive a cab, but you don’t have to have insurance to do brain surgery in South Florida.

There are more uninsured doctors practicing in South Florida than in any other area of the United States, says a recent report by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Patients injured by medical malpractice here take an additional slap in the face, unless they have a court-proven medical malpractice lawyer in their corner.

According to state physician statistics, more than 33 percent of all doctors in the Miami area, nearly 25 percent in ritzy Broward and Palm Beach counties – and 12 percent statewide – do not subscribe to malpractice insurance under a Florida law that allows them to practice medicine without coverage.

But the law says doctors that go uninsured must post signs in their offices and agree to pay up to $250,000 per malpractice award, with a maximum of $750,000 per year. If a doctor doesn't pay, the state can revoke their medical license.

Malpractice attorneys said uninsured doctors risk a lot, especially if they have not protected their assets properly.
