Wisconsin mother accepts $18.2-million malpractice settlement after hospital traumatizes daughter at birth
July 17, 2008 -- A Milwaukee woman has accepted an $18.2-million settlement for medical malpractice after a Wisconsin hospital left her daughter with severe brain injuries 10 years ago.
The woman received care during her pregnancy through a federally funded program for the poor, but, despite a history of having large babies and gestational diabetes, she was not referred to an obstetrician or a specialist.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that she went to the former Sinai-Samaritan Hospital to deliver her baby in 1998, but was left for more than 12 hours alone without a midwife or a doctor to attend to her. During her daughter’s birth, the baby was stuck for more than 20 minutes in the birth canal and suffered severe brain injury because of a lack of oxygen.
