Malpractice in the news: College freshman loses arm after doctors fail to diagnose infection
One night, a college freshman awoke with a pain in her right arm. Little did she know at the time she would be the victim of gross medical malpractice at a health center, according to The Post newspaper in Ohio.
A doctor at the center examined her and misdiagnosed her with muscle
strain.
When her pain did not abate, she returned to the health cancer an
hour and a half later.
The doctor changed her diagnosis to anxiety and
offered her a pain reliever and crackers, according to medical records her family
released to the newspaper.
It turns out, this young woman had a
potentially life-threatening infection that forced doctors at the health center
to amputate her right arm later that day. The article goes on to say that she
might have preserved some of her arm if she had been diagnosed in a timely
fashion.
