Malpractice Cases From Basic Medical Errors
According to a 2006 Associated Press report on malpractice, basic errors in medical care were responsible for nearly 60 percent of cases in which patients were harmed by a missed or delayed diagnosis.
The study, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reviewed over 300 cases, and noted that 181 allegedly involved diagnostic errors that ended up harming patients. More than half of the missed diagnoses involved cancer (primarily breast and colorectal cancer).
The researchers conducting the study stated that most of the medical mistakes reported were failure to order appropriate diagnostic tests; failure to create a proper follow-up plan; failure to obtain an adequate history or perform an adequate physical examination; and incorrect interpretation of tests.
