$2-million verdict in malpractice case. Inadequate oxygen during surgery caused brain injury
June 6, 2008 — A jury today awarded $2 million to a man who sued for medical malpractice claiming he suffered a brain injury because he didn’t receive proper care after having open heart surgery at a local hospital in 1998.
With interest, the award from the verdict could total up to $3.6 million, according to court documents.
The 59-year-old patient, a self-employed contractor, claimed in his medical malpractice lawsuit that he received an inadequate amount of oxygen to his brain because of mismanaged care and medical negligence.
According to the malpractice complaint, the damage erased certain memories of his family, affected his ability to form new memories, hampered his ability to make complex decisions and impaired his ability to communicate.
