$10 Million Settlement in Cleveland, Ohio Malpractice Case
In May, 2008, an Ohio woman who was in the midst of a jury trial involving Cleveland Clinic recently settled with the hospital for $10 million. The woman, who lived in a Cleveland suburb, brought the lawsuit on behalf of her brain damaged 6 year old son.
In an interesting turn in the legal aspect of the case, the settlement was reached while the jury was deciding their verdict. The settlement called for the jury’s damage verdict to remain sealed, but because of a court error, those documents were placed in the public case file.
That jury award, as reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, was $15.9 Million. Had the case not settled, that jury award would have been one of the largest verdicts awarded in Cuyahoga (Cleveland) County history.
