Lesbian Couple in Connecticut Claims Medical Malpractice

In 2006, the Associated Press reported on what at the time was considered the first of its kind: a Connecticut medical malpractice case claiming loss of consortium (companionship) where the partners were lesbians.

At the time of the article, Connecticut recognized legal civil unions giving the couple standing to file their lawsuit.

In this case, they filed a lawsuit against the two doctors who misdiagnosed one of the women with ovarian cancer.

After undergoing several years of surgeries and chemotherapy, the couple sought a second opinion, when it was discovered that while the cancer diagnosis was correct, the cancer was in her appendix.

In their lawsuit, they also claimed that the sick woman now uses a colostomy bag, is only able to walk short distances and no longer able to perform simple chores such as housework or gardening.
