NYC doctor linked in cosmetic surgery death
New York, March 7, 2008 -- A Manhattan plastic surgeon last week cut an
agreement with the New York State Office of Professional Medical Conduct to
surrender his medical license and cease practicing medicine after one of his
patients died during cosmetic surgery.
The surgeon, Dr. Michael Evan
Sachs, 57, with offices at 128 Central Park South, has been named in dozens of
medical malpractice lawsuits, and specifically charged with “flawed conduct” in
medical cases involving four unnamed patients, according to recent news
reports.
One of the patients was a woman named Kathleen Kelly Cregan, who
had traveled all the way from Ireland to have cosmetic surgery performed by Dr.
Sachs, only to die while in his care in 2005. A malpractice suit over Ms.
Cregan’s death is currently pending.
A spokesperson for the city medical
examiner said at the time that Dr. Sachs’s surgery was a significant
contributing factor to Ms. Cregan’s death. Dr. Sachs had already settled 33
malpractice lawsuits by 2005, according to newspapers.
