Child sustains profound brain damage in case of malpractice and botched delivery
A jury awarded a family $35 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit that accused a health system of causing brain damage to their little boy by botching the delivery, reported the Sun-Sentinel on June 16, 2008.
For the parents, whose 8-year-old is now severely mentally impaired, the jury's decision will enable them to purchase an expensive type of van with a wheelchair lift. They will also use the funds for his daily care, the article said. According to the Sentinel, the child is unable to feed himself or walk. He will ultimately require care for the rest of his life, said the report.
All too often, such medical errors become nightmares for patients, who must suffer the consequences of a health care practitioner's mistake.
