Medical Malpractice: Failure to Rescue
In an April 2008 by the health care ratings organization HealthGrades, they reported a chilling statistic on preventable complications and preventable deaths that result in increased medical malpractice lawsuits: what is known as “failure to rescue.”
Failure to rescue is the medical terminology used by hospital healthcare professions to refer a caregiver who fails to appropriately notice or respond--to sometimes vague symptoms—which result in an unexpected complication or death of a patient.
In the HealthGrades survey, where they monitored failure to rescue cases, noted a chilling statistic: Between 2004 and 2006, failure to rescue claimed more than 188,000 lives, amounting to about 128 deaths for every 1,000 patients at risk of complications.
