FDA Expands Antipsychotic Drug Warning: Potential Malpractice?

According to a report issued by Reuters in June 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called for pharmaceutical companies to include a “black box” warning on some older antipsychotic drugs. A black box warning means that studies indicate the drug carries a significant risk of serious side effects. In many instances, patients who have taken drugs that end up with the FDA black box warning file malpractice lawsuits.

The FDA warned that these older, conventional medications can increase the risk of death in some elderly patients. Antipsychotic drugs sometimes prescribed to elderly patients suffering from dementia or schizophrenia.
