Malpractice: Healthcare in the Northeast U.S.
Malpractice News: According to a study conducted by Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, where you live (in terms of geographic region) can play a significant role in the healthcare you receive. While the rates of disease are not different based on where you live, the way patients are treated is sometimes different. In the midwestern portion of the U.S., the study noted the following:
- Women living in the northeast get more frequent Pap tests and mammograms
than women who live in other areas of the country.
- Americans living in the northeast see more doctors and get more tests than
those living in other areas of the country. According to a 2004 report by the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, annual medical costs for northeast
residents totaled over $6,000, compared with a national average of
$5,000.
- In a 2006 study at the University of Louisville,
71 percent of breast cancer patients in the Northeast had lumpectomy surgery
instead of a mastectomy.
- A review of Medicare data from the mid-1990’s shows that Newark, New Jersey has the highest rate of inpatient hospital stays in the country.
