Henrietta woman wins $17 million medical malpractice case
Democrat and Chronicle reported on May 27, 2008 that a state Supreme Court jury ordered Strong Memorial Hospital to pay a former patient and Henrietta resident more than $17 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit.
Henrietta resident Brenda Schenk, 37, claimed a Caesarean delivery damaged her organs and resulted in the removal of her transplanted pancreas. Schenk had had a kidney and pancreas transplant in 1995 to treat her Type-1 brittle diabetes, and had a Cesarean delivery in 2003 because of risks with her pregnancy.
The suit alleges that, due to poor planning, doctors cut the connection between her pancreas and bladder during the procedure, causing pancreatic fluid and urine to leak into her abdominal cavity. The corrosive fluid burned her organs, ate through her abdominal wall and required doctors to remove her pancreas.
