Medical Malpractice: Doctors in Italy Investigated for Needless Surgeries
According to a June 2008 Associated Press report, 13 doctors practicing in a Milan, Italy clinic were arrested for criminal malpractice for allegedly performing needless and sometimes fatal operations.
Three of the doctors were arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly having performed abnormal or invasive surgeries on elderly patients and patients in fragile health. According to the report, five patients at the clinic are believed to have died after suspected needless surgeries.
Police investigators in Milan have stated that clinic records indicate that patient charts had been altered so that the clinic could obtain reimbursement for the costlier surgeries, resulting in the payment of over $3.8 million (U.S.) in extra monies.
Unlike the U.S., where healthcare costs are paid by private health insurance carriers, Italian health care is funded by national and regional health services.
