New York State Supreme Court jury awards $17 million to a woman in medical malpractice lawsuit involving delivery.
A New York State Supreme Court jury found a New York hospital liable for a medical malpractice case involving a troubled pregnancy and delivery.
After a week of deliberation, the jury found the hospital to be accountable for the patient's past and future injuries, pain, and suffering, consequently awarding patient $17 million dollars.
The patient had a kidney and pancreas transplant for type 1 diabetes treatment. Then in 2003, the patient become pregnant after her type-1 diabetes was under control. The medical malpractice suit alleged that doctors failed to plan appropriately for her pregnancy and neglected to notice that they had cut the connection between her pancreas and bladder during a Cesarean delivery, causing pancreatic fluid and urine to leak into her abdominal cavity.
