Study on Malpractice: Doctors Faulted for Giving Poor Instructions on Prescription Medication

According to a new study related to malpractice and prescriptions, which appears in the September 25th issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, physicians often prescribe medicines without giving their patients clear instructions about how to use them.

Researcher Derjung Tarn, M.D. Ph.D. of the University of California Los Angeles found that physicians gave adequate directions for less than 60 percent of all new medications and informed patients about duration of use and adverse effects only around a third of the time.

Tarn and his colleagues also found that doctor-patient communication was poor overall and could contribute to adverse effects and drug overdose, among other dangerous issues.
