Medical malpractice lawsuit against San Francisco hospital concludes with settlement
San Francisco General Hospital was sued for medical malpractice by John Weatherspoon. Mr. Weatherspoon alleges that hospital staff failed to monitor him after he was given sedatives. The failure to monitor resulted in cardiorespiratory failure.
The damages sought by Weatherspoon - initially $10 million - are to be used to pay for home care for the remainder of his life. He will receive $4.2 million after paying fees and expenses associated with the settlement.
Weatherspoon previously settled a lawsuit with the University of California for $250,000. San Francisco General Hospital is staffed by UCSF physicians; other medical personnel are city employees.
