Malpractice News: Infection Workers Battle the Spread of Staph—Wash Your Hands!
Malpractice News: Stopping the spread of drug-resistant staph infections has caught the attention of hospitals and nursing homes, especially after more than a year’s worth of news stories concerning patients contracting the bacterial infection. At a recent national conference for infection workers and specialist in Denver, Colorado, the participants were unanimous in one concern: how to beat the spread of staph when they can’t get their colleagues to wash their hands.
More than 2,000 infection experts responded to a survey conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. While three-quarters of the survey respondents stated their hospitals had been implementing stricter procedures for tackling the spread of staph, more than half said their facilities aren’t doing nearly enough to reduce the risk. The disease has been linked to more than 94,000 infections and nearly 19,000 deaths in the United States in 2005.
