Malpractice News: Study Finds Vision Loss and Poor Health Tied to Suicide
Malpractice News: According to a report in the Archives of Ophthalmology, loss or impairment of vision alone does not reflect a reportable increase in the risk of patient suicides. However, when a visually impaired patient is also in poor health, they are at a greater risk of contemplating or attempting suicide.
The study was conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, where 137,479 adults were surveyed between 1986 and 1996. After reviewing the survey data, the researchers then linked their data to the National Death Index’s mortality data. Their conclusions showed that during an 11 year follow-up period, 200 suicide deaths were recorded. When the researchers took into consideration health conditions unrelated to vision, visual impairment was linked with a 50 percent increased risk of death by suicide.
