Malpractice lawsuit: Health care system settles case involving gastrointestinal surgery
A medical malpractice lawsuit filed against a health system in Minnesota has been settled out of court, according to the Post-Bulletin on June 10, 2008.
Reportedly, the plaintiff first brought the case earlier this year, seeking
over $50,000 in damages.
The Post-Bulletin said court documents
indicated that the man underwent an endoscopic procedure on the upper part of
his gastrointestinal tract at a Rochester, MN clinic two years ago.
The
lawsuit alleged that the physician who treated him caused a perforation in the
small intestine.
As a result, the patient required emergency surgery for
repair of the perforation and hospitalization.
The man claimed the
physician was negligent and provided substandard medical care.
All too
often, such medical errors become nightmares for patients, who must suffer the
consequences of a health care practitioner's mistake.
